Faith exists at the edge of our abilities, at the place where we don’t know the answers, the place where we’re filled with anxiety and dread, the place where our only option is to step forward into the dark. In that place of uncertainty, there’s a choice: Do I shrink? Or do I excise a measure of faith and move forward? This type of choice is a core construct of life, unavoidable and frequent. No matter how much we want to protect ourselves, to keep ourselves from experiencing these places of fear, they’ll find a way in, as if the entire system is programmed to force us from safety and constancy toward circumstances that will make us choose. The more we choose not to shrink but to move forward, the more resilient we get, and the more capable we become of finding and creating better solutions in the future.
